vista xp permissions

I've recently installed Vista Bets 2 on a seperate partition to my XP installation. So i start up Vista, and want to access my files on my C Drive (where XP is installed). To do this I had to change some permissions.
When I rebooted back into XP, I found that I coud not access the files in My Documents anymore. So, is there a solution which allows me to access the files from both Vista and XP? Or, if that's not possible, just returning to XP, and have access there.

When changing permissions from Vista, you need to take care you do not change ownership or modify the permissions already on the files... you are just needing to add a permission.
Unfortunately, Vista makes this exceedingly difficult.

To do it properly in Vista:
1) Open an "administrator/root" explorer - Click start - Type explorer - right-click windows explorer - click run-as administrator
2) From the admin explorer, allow access to a folder - Browse to the folder you need access to - Right-click it - Click Properties - Click security tab - Click Edit - Click Add * If only your account needs acces, type your username * If every account on vista needs access, type: Users - Press enter - Click the checkbox under Allow next to Full control - Click OK - Click OK
NOTE: You may also have to repeat step 2 for folders within the folder you just set the permissions on, if they were created by the operating system.
Repeat step 2 for all folders you need access to.

Ok ... now to address you not having access in XP :)
- Find the folder you don't have access to - right-click it - click properties - Click Security tab - Click Advanced - Click Owner - Click Administrators - Click OK - Click OK - right-click the folder again - click properties - click security tab - click add * If only your account needs acces, type your username * If every account on XP needs access, type: Users - press enter - Click the checkbox under Allow next to Full control - Click OK

You can also just run your Vista account always as full administrator; however this is VERY INSECURE and DISABLES alot of the extra security features built-in to vista. But, things would "just work" like they would in Windows XP. Microsoft does not recommend that you do this.
- Click Start - Click Control Panel - Click User Accounts and Family Safety - Click User Accounts - Click Change Security Settings - Uncheck the checkbox - Click OK
You will need to restart your computer for this setting to take effect. This setting affects every account on the computer, not just yours.

Or you can make another partition, separate from XP and Vista, and use the new partition for document storage.
This in inherantly safer, because in the event you would lose either operating system, you can reformat to your hearts content and not lose documents.
